NEWCASTLE SCIENCE CITY LAUNCHES SCHOOLS’ PHOTO COMPETITION

October 6, 2008

School children from 7 – 16 years old are being encouraged to take photos of science and nature in the North East in a Newcastle Science City photography competition.

The aim of the competition is to make students think about the science in the photo they have taken and briefly describe it, to win a first class digital camera and a trip for their whole class to Centre for Life’s Lifelab.

There are two of these prizes – one for Key Stages 1 and 2 and one for Key Stages 2 and 3 as well as eight runners up prizes of a digital camera each. All the winners will get framed editions of their photographs.

Judges for the competition are photographer Roger Coulam who has taken stunning photos of the North East’s most dramatic land and seascapes, Peter Arnold, chief executive, Newcastle Science City and Anne Davies, secondary science consultant, Newcastle City Council.

Peter Arnold said: “We are really looking for the students to be inspired by their own environment and to think about science in this real world, so they appreciate it is all around them, not just in a laboratory.”

Roger Coulam added: “There are a huge range of potential subjects out there. From the colours of a rainbow over the countryside, to a close-up of a flower’s stamen, the whole world can be seen as science in action. We want to see pupils use their imagination and really look closely at the world around them and question how it works.”

Details of how to enter and some photography tips are on the Newcastle Science City website www.newcastlesciencecity.com and the closing date is Monday, 27 October.
