‘Schools out’ but young scientists don’t have to wait until September for their next science fix at the Lifelab within the Life Science Centre…
A 2hr highlight event called ‘Energetic Chemistry’ takes place on Saturday 21st August for 13-18yr olds.
A variety of reactive chemical experiments will be performed with full scientific explanations of how and why they work in the way they do and the precautions that must be taken to perform them safely.
Under the supervision of Master Chemist Noel Jackson, some of the most exciting and spectacular chemical experiments will be performed and explained including:
The Thermite Reaction:-
Fe2O3(s) + 2 Al(s) Al2O3(s) + 2 Fe(l)
(The chemicals ignite in a spectacular fashion and produce white hot molten metal)
and
making Gunpowder!
Science Sessions are new weekend day sessions for at least thirty 13 – 18 year olds who simply can’t get enough science and are keen to learn beyond the limits of the school curriculum. Some teenagers may even be considering a scientific career. Under the friendly and knowledgeable supervision of the brilliant Science Explainers and the inspiring Noel Jackson, Life’s Head of Education, attendees will learn to make, question and discuss science in an informal, yet supportive atmosphere.
Michael Crowder, pictured, who comes along to the Science Sessions whenever he can, says: “I really enjoy science sessions because you can learn science while having fun. We get treated like adults as well, which is good. It’s a great chance to be scientific in a laid-back and friendly environment.”
Science Sessions are completely independent of each other in subject matter and can be booked on an ad hoc basis. Previous sessions have covered DNA, Robotics and Rocket Science.
Places can be booked on 0191 243 8223 or by email sciencesessions@life.org.uk with an opportunity to join the mailing list. Tickets cost £5 payable on the door on the day.

Notes for Editors
Since opening in May 2000, Life has gained international recognition for its work in scientific research and its science centre. The centre hosts scientific exhibitions and events and welcomes around 220,000 visitors each year. Life also provides the largest number of science workshops in Europe, offering around 40,000 educational experiences to young people each year.
A series of public events are taking place in 2010 to mark the 10th anniversary and celebrate the successes achieved over the last decade.
