Members of North East Autism Society (NEAS) Science Club and their families celebrated its 5th birthday at a special party at Life.
The long-standing partnership with NEAS has led to many improvements in the science centre including physical adjustments, monthly Relaxed Sunday Sessions (dedicated quiet time for autistic people and those with other sensory needs) and specialist training for the team.
This has also led to international recognition and a clutch of awards for Life as well as the accolade of being the only organisation to receive the Autism Acceptance Gold+ award from NEAS.
Kerrie Highcock, NEAS Family Development Manager
“The science club has had a huge impact on autistic participants and their families or carers.
“It’s about building confidence, developing connections and being able to be exactly who you are in a safe and neurodiversity-affirming environment. The friendships and the sense of belonging and ownership it has given the young people have been invaluable.”

The party also saw the premiere of a short film produced by Life and funded by the Royal Society for Chemistry and Stem Learning, about the science club and its impact on young people, their parents and carers. You can watch it below.
